Frequently asked questions about hand block printed bedsheets

What is a hand block printed bedsheet?
A hand block printed bedsheet is made by pressing hand-carved wooden blocks dipped in natural or azo-free pigments onto cotton fabric, one impression at a time. The craft dates back 400 years in Sanganer, Jaipur. Thread Kalaa works with artisan families whose practice has passed through 3 generations.

How is hand block printing different from screen printing or digital printing?
Hand block printing uses carved wooden blocks pressed by hand — slow, deliberate, with natural variations. Screen printing uses mesh templates with uniform output. Digital printing is machine-sprayed ink. Only hand block printing carries the texture, slight asymmetry and depth that mark genuine craft.

Will hand block printed bedsheets bleed in the first wash?
Gentle release of excess pigment is normal for the first one or two cold washes. Wash separately in cold water with mild detergent (no bleach), air dry in shade. After the first two washes the colour sets and will not bleed. See our full guide: care for hand-block printed cotton.

What is the right size for my bed?
Double (90×100 inches), Queen (90×108 inches), King (100×108 inches). Measure your mattress and add 15–20 inches on each side for drop. Thicker mattresses (10+ inches) need one size up to maintain the drop.

How do I care for a hand block printed cotton bedsheet?
Cold machine wash on gentle, mild detergent, no bleach, air dry in shade. Light steam iron on the reverse side if needed. Full guide: our care guide.

Where are Thread Kalaa hand block printed bedsheets made?
All our bedsheets are hand block printed in Sanganer, Jaipur, India. We partner directly with artisan workshops — no middlemen — so artisans earn fair wages and the craft continues to thrive.

How to measure your bed for a hand block printed bedsheet

  1. Measure your mattress. Width and length in inches. Common sizes: Double 54×78, Queen 60×80, King 72×80.
  2. Add drop for tuck-under. Add 15–20 inches on each side (width AND length) for tuck-under.
  3. Add length for the headboard. Add an extra 10 inches at the head if you want the sheet to tuck under the pillow.
  4. Check your mattress depth. For 10+ inch deep mattresses, pick one size up to maintain the drop.
  5. Pick your Thread Kalaa size. 90×100 = Double, 90×108 = Queen, 100×108 = King. Each ships with two matching pillow covers (17×27 inches).
