Frequently asked questions

What is a Jaipuri razai?
Jaipuri razai is a traditional cotton-filled quilt from Jaipur, hand-block printed with Sanganer motifs. ‘Razai’ is the Hindi word for a cotton-batting-filled cover. Jaipuri razais are known for their lightweight warmth, bright block-print aesthetics, and durability (10+ years with gentle care).

Is a quilt the same as a comforter?
No. A quilt has cotton batting inside and is hand-stitched through. A comforter has polyester or microfibre fill. Quilts are breathable, machine-washable, and last 10–15 years. Comforters are warmer and cheaper but trap heat and often need dry-cleaning. See our dohar vs quilt vs comforter vs duvet guide.

What size is a Jaipuri quilt?
Our Jaipuri quilts come in Double size only (approximately 90×108 inches). Perfect for a Double or Queen bed with generous drape on either side.

How warm is a Jaipuri quilt?
Mid-weight. Warm enough for Indian winter nights down to 10°C. For sub-10°C conditions (Delhi NCR, Punjab), layer a thin blanket on top. For hill-station winters, pair with a heavier comforter or duvet.

How do I wash a Jaipuri quilt?
Gentle cold machine wash (front load preferred, cotton batting is dense), mild detergent, no bleach. Flat dry on a bedsheet in shade. Takes 24–48 hours to dry fully — plan a sunny weekend. Avoid dryer heat. Steam iron on reverse if needed.

Will the quilt shrink or bleed on first wash?
Minor 2–3% shrinkage after first wash. Gentle colour bleed for 1–2 washes then sets. Wash separately in cold water with mild detergent.

How to pick and care for a Jaipuri quilt

  1. Pick the right weight for your climate. Mild Indian winter (10–18°C): standard Jaipuri razai is enough. Cold plains winter (sub-10°C): layer a thin blanket on top.
  2. Check the batting weight. Thread Kalaa quilts use pure cotton batting at approximately 800g–1.2kg total. Lighter batting = cooler quilt. Heavier batting = warmer.
  3. Confirm the stitching. Hand-stitched channel finish holds the batting evenly. Look for stitching every 4–6 inches so the fill does not clump.
  4. Plan the drying time. Cotton batting takes 24–48 hours to dry fully after wash. Have a backup cover for those days.
  5. Store folded, not compressed. Fold loosely between seasons, store in a breathable cotton bag. Avoid vacuum-sealed storage which crushes the cotton loft.
