About this collection

Everything you need to pick the right piece

Elephants, peacocks, birds, deer — the Rajputana artist's bestiary, carved into wood and pressed into cotton. Our animal-motif collection carries 7 of these designs, each tied to a story in Jaipur folklore.

The animals in our collection

  • Elephant (haathi) — the royal mount; symbol of wisdom and prosperity in Rajput courts
  • Peacock (mor) — the national bird; its tail-feather geometry fits perfectly into a repeat block
  • Bird (chidiya) — generic songbird motif; soft, suited to children's rooms
  • Deer (hiran) — forest poetry; usually paired with vines or trees

Why animal motifs are harder to hand-block

An elephant has a trunk. A peacock has a tail. These are curved, organic shapes that break a geometric repeat. The chhipa must carve the main body on one block, the legs on another, the trunk on a third — then line them up on the fabric within half a millimetre. One slip and the elephant has two trunks or three legs. The precision is what makes these so costly to produce and so special to own.

Best use at home

  • Children's rooms — a peacock dohar or elephant cushion carries wonder
  • Festive décor — Diwali, Ganpati, elephant motifs are auspicious
  • Gift pieces — a hand-block printed elephant throw is a wedding or housewarming classic
